The Narayan Lab for Coastal and Nature-based Adaptation is hiring a post-doctoral scholar with expertise in coastal hydrodynamic modeling and statistics as part of a 3-year NASA ROSES project investigating feedbacks between coastal ecosystems, cyclone activity, and coastal protection benefits in the Caribbean. The successful candidate will develop a modeling framework to integrate remotely sensed datasets with coastal hydrodynamic models for dynamic assessments of the flood protection benefits of coastal ecosystems. The postdoc will be mentored by Dr. Siddharth Narayan and Dr. David Lagomasino at ECU and will work closely with colleagues at ECU and at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for extension for at least one more year contingent on performance and availability of project funds.
Toapply, visit https://ecu.peopleadmin.com/postings/66343. Applicants will need to attach, a) their CV or resume, b) cover letter, c) 1 – 2 sample research papers and d) names and contact information of 3 references. Screening for the position will begin on November 15, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date for this position is Jan 15, 2024.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the postdoc will be to develop a coastal modeling framework that will integrate novel remotely sensed data on meteorological, bathymetry and coastal ecosystems within 2-D and 1-D coastal numerical models, to assess how changes to offshore and ecosystem conditions will influence the flood protection benefits of these ecosystems along the coast. The successful candidate will lead activities for the parameterization and validation of numerical models to assess and map coastal flooding, integration of satellite-based datasets into the coastal models and build statistical models to assess the influence of meteorological, ocean and ecosystem variables on flood extents. The postdoc will be expected to work collaboratively as part of a larger interdisciplinary team and publish shared scholarly works and assist with project meetings and reports.
The postdoc will work under the mentorship of Drs. Siddharth Narayan and David Lagomasino at East Carolina University and will work closely with collaborators at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The location of the position is flexible, and the successful candidate can be based either at ECU’s Coastal campus in the Coastal Studies Institute, on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, or at ECU’s Greenville Campus. The position will require regular travel between the two ECU campuses and annual visits to Washington D.C.
